Irrigating Arid Hills with Lift Technology

In a groundbreaking effort fueled by an investment of 1 crore 35 lakhs, an elevated irrigation project has breathed life into the arid hills of Tila, Nepal. Once plagued by decades of unproductive land, the communities of Larmi and Lihi villages in Tila rural municipality are now witnessing the transformation of their barren terrains due to the introduction of water from the Tila river, a kilometer away. Made possible through the financial support of the Adaptation Fund, the Federal Ministry of Forestry and Environment of the Government of Nepal, the World Food Program, and Pace Nepal, the project has successfully established a lift irrigation system. This initiative holds the potential to irrigate 32 hectares of land, offering a ray of hope to farmers who previously struggled with inadequate water supply. The project’s implementation marks a significant stride towards addressing the longstanding challenge of irrigation in the Karnali region, where nearly 82,000 hectares of arable land remains barren due to lack of water resources.
